Abu Dhabi, UAE: Veteran actor, So Ji-sub a prominent figure in the South Korean entertainment industry for over 30 years, recently visited the UAE for a fan signing event.
Starting as a model, the actor transitioned into a well-known actor, with his captivating performances in both television and film, he recently starred in the Netflix series The Square.
In the Netflix noir action series, he plays the lead character, Nam Gi-jun, who returns to the underworld known as 'The Square', to uncover the truth behind his brother's death. The original Korean name of the K-drama is Gwangjang (광장). It was released on Netflix on June 6, 2025, and is also known by its English title, Mercy for None.
The actor performed a significant portion of the action scenes himself and even lost weight to portray a sharper image. The series achieved significant global popularity, reaching No. 1 on Netflix's Global Top 10 Series (non-English) list.
In an interview with Gulf Korean Times the actor discussed his career, his latest project, and his favourite things.
Q. Your recent Netflix series The Square received a lot of love from international fans. What kind of preparation did you do for the role?
Actor So Ji-sub: Since the character Gijoon had an Achilles tendon injury in his right ankle due to a past incident, I practiced walking with a brace before filming to learn how to reflect his handicap. Also, as the character gradually falls apart while pursuing revenge, I had to show that change through my appearance, so I followed a controlled diet during the shoot.
Q. Now that The Square promotion has ended and you're currently resting while reviewing upcoming projects, what has brought you the most joy in your daily life over the past month?
Actor So Ji-sub: While working on a project, I usually have to tailor my daily life to the filming schedule. Since finishing the promotion for The Square, I’ve been recharging and enjoying a more normal routine. Regular workouts and living according to my personal rhythm without anything special—that gives me the greatest happiness.
Q. If you had a one-week vacation, where in the UAE would you like to visit?
Actor So Ji-sub: This is my first time in the UAE thanks to this fan signing event, and since I'm in Abu Dhabi, I'd like to explore different places around here. I heard there's a stadium where you can watch F1 racing, and if I get the chance, I'd love to see it.
Q. Is there a movie you’d recommend to your UAE fans—perhaps one of your personal favorites?
Actor So Ji-sub: I really like Romeo and Juliet starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey, and also 50 First Dates. When I first watched 50 First Dates, I thought it was just a funny movie, but the second time it felt sad, and by the third time, it left such a strong impression that I still watch it now and then. Love stories transcend language and nationality, so I think anyone can relate to and enjoy them. That’s why I’d like to recommend those two films.
Q. Is there a place in Korea you’d recommend to UAE and international fans?
Actor So Ji-sub: Since this interview is taking place in Abu Dhabi, I’ll recommend Seoul, the capital of Korea. I’d suggest visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace or the Hanok Village in Bukchon, where you can feel the charm of old Korea. Experiencing traditional Korean aesthetics nestled between modern skyscrapers will definitely be something unique and memorable.
Q. You've received love from fans for over 30 years since your debut. What has been your greatest source of strength?
Actor So Ji-sub: 30 years already! Even I’m surprised sometimes. In the end, I think it’s the people around me who’ve allowed me to keep going as an actor. It could be my family, colleagues at my agency, staff I’ve worked with, or the fans who support me. Those who continue to believe in me are truly the driving force behind my career. In that sense, I hope everyone around me finds success. These days, what makes me happiest isn't necessarily becoming more famous or successful myself—but seeing the people around me do well.
