I had the privilege of meeting Katy Lee, a distinguished Korean hotelier from Asia with an exceptional career in Dubai. She graciously shared the meaningful relationships and pivotal experiences that have contributed to her remarkable growth and transformation.

Q1. What made you move to the U.S. alone without your family at the age of 15?

It all started with a simple decision to enter an English speech contest—something way outside my comfort zone at the time. To my shock, I ended up winning. That moment completely changed my life. The prize? A scholarship for an exchange program in the U.S.

Soon after, a host family in Kentucky chose me to live with them. Suddenly, at just 15 years old, I found myself halfway across the world, spending my sophomore year at a small public high school in Kentucky—as the only Asian student in the entire school. It was intimidating, exciting, and completely life-changing. That year taught me how to adapt, find my voice, and build connections beyond language or culture. It was the beginning of everything for me.

Q2.What was the most challenging aspect of living in a foreign country for your studies at such a young age?

Throwing myself into a completely unfamiliar culture as a teenager was like being dropped into the deep end with no lifeline. Overnight, I had to grow up—fast. I was suddenly in charge of every decision, every mistake, and every consequence. There were moments when the loneliness hit hard, and the pressure felt overwhelming. But at the same time, it lit a fire in me. I had to adapt, think ahead, and trust myself in ways I never had before. That experience didn’t just challenge me—it transformed me. It taught me to analyze every move carefully and take ownership of my life. Looking back, it was a wild, difficult ride—but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It built the person I am today and gave me connections and life lessons I’ll carry forever.

Q3.What were some of the most challenging parts of your journey from graduating in Hospitality Management to reaching your current position as a hotelier?

Starting out in the hotel industry as a young Asian woman definitely wasn’t easy. I wasn’t just building a career—I was breaking barriers and creating space in a field where people like me are still underrepresented. I see myself not just walking the path, but helping to shape it for the next generation of hoteliers.

The journey came with many unexpected moments. From handling difficult guest situations to navigating complex team dynamics, I’ve faced challenges that pushed me to grow—both as a professional and as a person. But I never saw these experiences as obstacles. Instead, they became opportunities to learn, lead, and adapt.

Every interaction—with guests, colleagues, and mentors—has played a part in shaping who I am today. Hospitality is more than just a job to me; it’s about human connection, resilience, and finding strength in every situation. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come—and excited to keep making a difference in this industry.

Q4. Do you have any advice you would like to share with young people in Korea who dream of becoming hoteliers abroad?

Dream big and be fearless! Don’t hesitate to grab every opportunity that comes your way—even if it feels daunting. I’ll never forget the late-night interviews at 2AM, the endless applications, and the nervous excitement of stepping into the unknown. It wasn’t an easy road, but looking back, I can say with confidence: it’s absolutely worth it.

This journey has taken me across the globe, meeting incredible people and gaining experiences I never could have imagined. Falling in love with hospitality has transformed my life in ways I can’t even put into words. And I know that if you take the leap, it will change yours too.

To anyone dreaming of becoming a hotelier abroad—just go for it. Be bold, take risks, and say yes to every chance. Your future is out there waiting for you to seize it.

Q5. Could you share one of the most memorable experiences you've had while working as a hotelier in Dubai?

Dubai is a city all about innovation, always striving to break new ground—and one of the most unforgettable experiences of my career happened while working on one of its most incredible projects: the luxury resort on The World Islands.

Spending 2.5 years on this remarkable island was an experience that transformed me in ways I never expected. Every day felt like a new adventure, surrounded by breathtaking views and working on a project that pushed the boundaries of what hospitality could be. The challenges were real, but the rewards were even greater.

The people I met, the skills I developed, and the memories I created during those years are something I’ll carry with me forever. It was a chapter in my life that not only shaped my career but also deepened my love for the industry. It’s an experience I’ll always cherish.

Q6. In your roles as a wife, a mother, and as yourself, what do you consider the most valuable form of happiness in life?

“Happy wife, happy life,” and “Happy mom, happy life”—both sayings are absolutely true in my case. But the most valuable form of happiness I’ve found comes from the incredible support my family gives me. It’s the love and encouragement that allow me to follow my dreams, love myself, and keep doing what I’m passionate about.

What truly takes my breath away, though, is the way my husband supports me. He handles the balance of my "selfish" pursuit of my dreams while taking care of our son—without any extra help like a nanny. The way he juggles it all is nothing short of extraordinary. I am forever grateful for him and his unwavering support.

That kind of love, partnership, and dedication? It’s the ultimate happiness that keeps me going every day.
