Arirang Narsha

Photography exhibition of Yang Jaemoon.

Reinterpreting Korean traditional dances and turning them into dreamy images.

Photos by Yang Jaemoon accentuate the beauty of traditional Korean dance with long trails of the movements of dancers. His hazy images taken by long exposure are so fascinating that they represent the mystical beauty of Korean dance including the elegant rhythm of the dancers’ arms soaring up to the sky in long sleeves, the majestic group dance in fantastic movements, and the splendid costumes of dancers in traditional Korean colors.

Traditional Korean dance is usually characterized by ‘stillness in movement or movement in stillness’. This means true movement is revealed in stillness and stillness emerges from movement. The dancer places himself or herself at the center of the universe and focuses his or her breath on every movement of dancing. Such moment of stop and go is the most critical feature of traditional Korean dance.

Arirang Narsha by Yang Jaemoon presents diverse subtle movements of traditional Korean dance. Mr. Yang has shown his unique imagery in his series of traditional Korean dance including 1994 Blue Journey and 2016 Heavenly Dream. In Arirang Narsha, he tries to tell his story to viewers by presenting unique imagery created by his interpretation of traditional Korean dance.
